Sometimes quotes and speech encourage self-reliance and happiness. Youth born after 1995 are more connected than ever because of computers, smartphones, and social media. However, along with the benefits of being a simple post away from sharing our success and failures, comes increased anxiety and chances for depression. Speech and writing continues as means of expression that helps students and adults to cope. Below are a few more positive quotes for kids that encourage fortitude.

I often quote Martin Luther King, Jr. while coaching speech and debate for his proposition in his document "The Purpose of Education" that the goal of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. (King, M. L., Carson, C., Luker, R. E., Russell, P. A., & Harlan, L. R. (1992). The papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press.) I consider this a positive quote for kids because MLK is someone that students know and respect. Quoting him can increase my ethos in the classroom setting. Students may not be ready to listen to what I have to say, but they will respect a hero like King.
My favorite MLK quote is "Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.”
I use Dr. King's quotes to encourage students to do hard work like speech and debate, rather than focus their education on rote memorization. Good public speaking requires young people to develop and use critical thinking skills. For example, a good student speech will develop several claims with supporting evidence and explanations, sometimes called tie-ins or warrants. Moreover, an expression that is not just average, but notable, will develop a theme that weaves through the speech and gathers the attention of the audience effectively in the beginning introduction portion of the address. Using positive quotes for kids provides an excellent way to write an exciting attention getter.
